PHS Medical Director, Roy Maynard, MD talks about the importance of immunizations on the health of children. In the past 50 years vaccine preventable diseases have decreased by 90% through the use of vaccine preventable diseases. Unfortunately, there are still diseases out there can are vaccine preventable diseases such as the whooping chough, chicken pox, invasive haemophilus influenzae and influenza disease. There has been false material that the Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) vaccine causes autism, that is NOT true. It has been disproven and without a doubt that vaccine is very safe. People who elect not to use vaccines do so by placing their children at risk in the population. Heard immunity (everyone around you is immunized against a certain disease) does help those people who choose not to become immunized. AAP promotes vaccines, and have a routine immunization schedule. PHS supports the AAP policy on childhood immunizations Some children with immunodeficiency syndrome should check with their physician or health care provider prior to immunization especially if they have concerns with live vaccines and their children. Now that the school season is here and fall is approaching the risk for infection increases, it would be a good idea to take a look at your child's immunization schedule and consider a flu shot for you and your family.
